As munitions are used for special purpose of war, the quality can be very critical to the victory of war and in case of any problems, it can be fatal. Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that the quality assurance activities for these munitions are the quality assurance activities for the national defense of the Republic of Korea.
Definition (Concept)
The Quality Assurance (QA) of munitions grants official credibility on munitions. The QA is a series of planned and systematic activities that is necessary to give the product reasonable credibility of satisfying the quality demand. In particular, the munitions need life-cycle QA activities that cover planning, development, mass production, and operation, given the unique characteristics and safety.
Introduction of work
The Defense Agency for Technology and Quality (DTaQ) is delegated to conduct the governmental quality inspection of munitions. We are implementing the well-organized activities of all stages from quality designing at development stage, quality forming at production stage, and quality maintaining at arrangement and operation stages, in order to fulfill the military requirement and to secure credibility on quality.
We conduct evaluation test on the products designed and developed by companies so that we would check if the products fulfill the requirements from the military. Through deliberations, we confirm the defense standards that are basis for mass production.
We also supervise the quality management of companies to check whether the systems and procedures are appropriate for the company and the products are manufactured complying with the regulations. At the same time, the DTaQ decides whether the contracted item produced by the company fulfills the applied standards and reviews technical issues for quality improvement.
The quality maintenance activities include the supply in the right time, maintenance and repair, and storage management of produced munitions. The quality information acquired from operation is collected and reflected in the future projects.
Introduction of the role of the Korea Quality Assurance
The Korea Quality Assurance is the host and the evaluator of all QA activities. Basically, they monitor the quality management of munitions producing companies and decide on the appropriateness of system and procedures, supervise the manufacturing, and approve the finished goods. However, going beyond the simple role of inspector, it also plays a role as an advisor for quality and production director. They even play a role as a decision maker on many problems generated in the production site.

Achievement
“Enhancing Quality Credibility and Flight Safety of Surion”
Korea is one of top 7 helicopter owner countries in the world, and it became the 11th helicopter developer in the world, thanks to the development of Surion, a Korean utility helicopter. Surion (KUH) was, from developing stage, applied with the optimal functions that fulfill the requirement of the military and is still being improved to reinforce the operation skill and stability. In particular, the DTaQ improved the anti-collision system and safeguard system as part of its QA and improvement activities, in turn; the safety and quality credibility, operation rate, and pilot’s mission capability are enhanced. Still, the DTaQ is contributing to the enhancement of independent national defense by QA and improvement activities.
